Sant, Jain, Nayse and Tijare in semis
DEFENDING champion Vijay Sant from Loksatta, Vilas Tijare, Ashish Jain from Lokmat, and Suhas Nayse from Times of India moved into the semi-finals of the Gracelands Cup Badminton Tournament for Media Employees organised by Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with PGTD Physical Education of RTM Nagpur University at Subhedar Hall.
In the quarter-finals, Vilas Tijare defeated Proshun Chakraborty (TOI) 30-4, while Ashish Jain ousted Sujan Masid (Dainik Bhaskar) 30-3. Sant had no difficulty in thrashing Amit Sampat 30-8 and Suhas Nayse crushed Suraj Ingole 30-2.
In the women’s category, Rakhi Chavan will clash with Manjusha Joshi in the final. While Chavan thrashed Vaidehi Ranade (TOI) 30-18, Manjusha Joshi (Maharashtra Times) got the better of Aparna Nair (TOI) 30-21.

ToI shuttlers dominate Day One
Badminton meet gets under way
Times of India shuttlers, led by Suhas Nayse, hogged the limelight on Day One of the 9th badminton tournament for media employees. The tournament is sponsored by Gracelands and organised by Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with PGTD Physical Education of RTM Nagpur University at Subhedar Hall got under way on Friday, March 9, 2013.
Former international shuttler and president of the Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA), Pradeep Gandhe inaugurated the tournament. Vice-chancellor of RTM Nagpur University Dr Vilas Sapkal presided over the function. Chairman of Gracelands Shekhar Jadhao, president of Nagpur District Badminton Association Balbir Singh Renu and secretary Mangesh Kashikar shared the dais. Co-ordinator of PGTD Physical Education Dr Sanjay Choudhary, Director of Department of Sports and Physical Education of RTM Nagpur University Dr Dhananjay Welukar, Prof AP Joshi and others were also present on the occasion. SJAN secretary Kishor Bagde made introductory remarks. Former SJAN president Dr Ram Thakur conducted the proceedings while treasurer Anupam Soni proposed a vote of thanks.
GANDHE’S NOBLE GESTURE
WHILE APPRECIATING THE ACTIVITIES OF SJAN, PRADEEP GANDHE DONATED RS 30,000 TO THE ASSOCIATION. THE SJAN HAS DECIDED TO UTILIZE THE FUND FOR THE WELFARE OF NEEDY AND TALENTED BADMINTON PLAYERS OF THE CITY.

Gandhe to open media badminton meet on 8th
Former international shuttler and president of the Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA), Pradeep Gandhe will inaugurate
the Gracelands Cup Annual Badminton Tournament For Media Employees, organised jointly by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) and Post Graduate Teaching Department for Physical Education, RTM Nagpur University, at Subhedar Hall on March 8 at 10 a..m.
Vice-chancellor of RTM Nagpur University Dr Vilas Sapkal will preside over the function. Chairman of Gracelands Shekhar Jadhao, coordinator of PGTD Physical Education Dr Sanjay Choudhary, director of Department of Sports and Physical Education of RTM Nagpur University Dr Dhananjay Welukar, president of Nagpur District Badminton Association Balbir Singh Renu and secretary Mangesh Kashikar will be the guests of honour. The matches will begin at 8.30 a.m. The event is sponsored for the third year in succession by Gracelands. Matches will be played with Carlton feather shuttles. Laxmi Nagar-based Shree Sports has sponsored the shuttles.The tournament will conclude on March 10 with prize distribution function.

Sant gets top billing in media badminton
Loksatta's Vijay Sant has been given top billing in Gracelands Cup 9th Badminton Tournament for Media Employees organised by the Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with PGTD of Department of Physical Education of Nagpur University at Subhedar Hall from March 8.
The tournament has evoked overwhelming response. The categories include men's singles, men's doubles and women's singles. Lokmat's Ashish Jain has been given second seeding. Suhas Nayse (The Times of India) and Vilas Tijare (Lokmat) have been given third and fourth ranking respectively.
In the men's doubles, The Times of India duo Suhas Nayse-Madhav Soman are ranked one followed by Ashish Jain-Vilas Tijare. The event is sponsored for the third year in succession by Gracelands. Matches will be played with Carlton feather shuttles. Laxmi Nagar-based Shree Sports have sponsored the shuttles. Amit Raut is the chief referee of the tournament and he will be assisted by Sneha Faizpurkar and others.

Pradeep Gandhe to grace SJAN media badminton
Former international shuttler and president of the Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA), Pradeep Gandhe, will inaugurate the annual badminton tournament for media employees, organised jointly by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) and Post Graduate Teaching Department for Physical Education, RTM Nagpur University, at Subhedar Hall here on March 8.
Gandhe, who is also the vice-president of Badminton Association of India (BAI) and convenor of the forthcoming Indian Badminton League, will arrive on Friday morning from Mumbai. He will declare open the three-day tournament at 10 am, said SJAN secretary Kishor Bagde.
The event will be sponsored for the third year in succession by Gracelands. Matches will be played with Carlton feather shuttles. Laxmi Nagar-based Shree Sports will sponsor the shuttles.
The categories include men’s singles and doubles and women’s singles. Last date for confirming entries is March 5. Entries should be confirmed with sports desks of respective newspapers or convenor Amit Ramteke (9923156811).
