20th OCW-SJAN Inter-Press Twenty20 Cricket Begins

Lokmat off to a flying start, Sakal win



Defending champions Lokmat started their cmpaign on winning note defeating The Hitavada by 22 runs in 20th OCW-SJAN Inter-press Invitational T-20 Cricket Tournament at Dr Ambedkar College ground on Sunday.
The tournament has been organised by Sports Journalists' Associaiton of Nagpur in association with OCW and State Bank of India.
In another match, Sakal recorded 36-run victory over Tarun Bharat. 
At Ambedkar College grund riding on Pravin Lokhande's 55-ball 87, Lokmat piled up 167 for six in 20 overs. Lokhande's knock was studded with four sixes and ten boundaries. Nitin Shriwas (30, 21b, 1x6, 2x4) and Nitin Patariya (29, 28b, 4x4) gave him good company. For The Hitavada, veteran Susheem Koley and Anupam Timothy took two wickets each.
In reply, The  Hitavada were restricted to 145 for 7 in 20 overs. Pankaj Borkar top scored with (42, 37b, 6x4). Pradeep  Kumar Yadav (21, 12b, 2x6, 1x4) tried his best but in vain.  Nikhil Dixit contributed 17. For Lokmat, Nitin Shriwas (3 for 22) was the pick of the bowlers. Ashish Budholiya got two for 33.
At Vasant Nagar ground, batting first Sakal scored 153 for nine in 20 overs. Pritesh Uchkalwar (50, 39b, 7x40 and Shubham (37) batted well. For Tarun Bharat Dinesh Borkar got two wickets for 24 runs. In reply, Tarun Bharat were bundled out for 118 in 14.5 overs. Only skipper Nitin Baiture (42) and Lakhan Jaiswal (27) showed some resistance. For Sakal, Prajwal Harne (4 for 28) and Uchkalwar (3 for 16) were the main wicket takers.
Earlier former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar inaugurated the tournament by releasing balloons in the air and perfuming pooja of wicket. Lead promoter of OCW and MBA president Arun Lakhani, former Indian cricketer Prashant Vaidya, assistant general manager of SBI Nagpur main branch Mohan Changde, OCW director KMP Singh and vice-principal of Dr Ambedkar College Dr Arvind Joshi, SJAN president Kishor Bagde and secretary Sandeep Dabhekar shared the dais. Former Vidarbha Ranji captain Hemant Wasu, noted sports organiser Deven Dasture and others were also present on the occasion. Dr Ram Thakur conducted the proceedings while treasurer Suhas Nayse proposed a vote of thanks.

Vengsarkar arrives in the city

OCW-SJAN inter-press cricket from today

Former Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar has arrived in the city on Saturday evening  to inaugurate 20th OCW -SJAN Inter Preess Twenty-20 Invitational Cricket Tournament at Ambekkar College ground at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday.
Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) has organised the tournament in association with OCW and State Bank of India. 
 Chief promoter of OCW and MBA president Arun Lakhani will preside over the inaugural function. Assistant general manager of SBI Nagpur Ravindra Patil, assistant general manager of SBI main branch Mohan Changde, vice-principal of Dr Ambedkar College Dr Arvind Joshi and  former Indian cricketer Prashant Vaidya will also grace the occasion.

An inaugural match will be played between defending champion Lokmat and The Hitavada immediately after the inauguration at the same venue. Another match will be played at Vasant Nagar ground between Sakal and Tarun Bharat. 
In all 10 teams are participating the tournament and they  have been divided in two groups. The top two teams of both the groups will
qualify for the semifinal. Defending champions Lokmat, The Hitavada, Punyanagri, Tarun Bharat and Sakal have been placed in Group ‘A’. Group ‘B’ consist of runners up of last edition The Times of India, Lokshahi Varta, Dainik Bhaskar, Loksatta and Deshonnati.
Meanwhile on Friday kits were distributed to the players at the hands of  OCW director KMP Singh, leader of ruling party in NMC Sandeep Joshi, noted sports organiser Anil Ahirkar and Dr Arvind Joshi at a function held at SJAN office. 









SJAN's Media Walkathon 2017

Sharma, Rahate, Shubhangi, Lata triumph



Rajesh Sharma, Shashi Rahate, Shubhangi Jagtap and Lata Hatwar emerged winners in their respective categories in 5th Media Walkathon 2017 for Media Employees on Sunday.
The event was organised by Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with Tirupati Urban Co-operative Bank.
In four-kilometre men's below 50 section, Sharma of Lokmat clocked 19. 29: 97 minutes to retain the title. Ishwar Polkar (Sakal) and Govind Hatwar (also from Sakal) secured second and third place respectively. Ajay Raibole (Loksatta) and Raviraj Ambadwar (Lokmat) came fourth and fifth respectively.
In men's four kilometre above 50 years section, TOI's Shashi Rahate triumphed clocking 20.21: 16 minutes Arvind Upare of Lokmat followed him for second place whereas TOI's Alok Tiwari finished third. Chandrashekhar Pathrabe (DD) and Avinash Halmare (The Hitavada) also excelled.
In two-kilometre working women section, Shubhangi Jagtap (Lokshahi Varta 16:15. 53) emerged winner. Remaining four prizes went to Dainik Bhaskar's Anita Shrivastava, Anita Peddulwar, Shila Bante and Sonali Singh.
In family section, Lata Hatwar, Savita Hurmale, Vaishali Choudhary, Sonali Patil and Vaishali Nagdevte came first to fifth respectively.
Consolation prizes were given to Atika Nayse, Chaitali Nayse and Vaishnavi Deogade in kids section.
Rajya Sabha member Dr Vikas Mahatme, Chief manager of Tirupati Urban Co-operative Bank  Rajendra Raut , PI of Bajaj Nagar police station Dnyaneshwar Patil distributed the prizes. SJAN president Kishor Bagde also shared the dais. Dr Ram Thakur conducted the proceedings. The team of Nagpur District Athletics Association under the leadership of Dr Sharad Suryavanshi provided technical support.

SJAN-Raisoni annual sports awards distributed

3 'Ds' the formula of success: Padukone







While guiding the budding sportspersons Indian badminton legend Prakash Padukone said to exel in any sports discipline 3 'Ds' i.e. Discipline, Dedication and Determination is the formula of success.
He was speaking during SJAN-Raisoni Achievers annual award function jointly organised by Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur and Raisoni Group at a city hotel of Sunday.
The chairman of Raisoni Group Sunil Raisoni presided over the function. Joint MD of Baidyanath Group Suresh Sharma, Deputy Zonal manager of Bank of Maharashtra Anand Kothiwan were the guest of honour.
Former Indina shuttler further said, " To become outstanding sporspeson one has to make lot of sacrifices. It is very difficult  to maintain a balance  between games and academics. Therefore the players has to become expert in time management also.
Padukone who won the national badminton title at the age of just 16 said today's younger generation is quite lucky. They have lot of opportunities and the only need is to grab them. There  was a time when only cricketers used to excel but now the situation has changed. He said now the Central government has also become serious about sports and sportspersons and lot of private foundations and corporates are also coming forward for sports promotion and that is a good sign for development of  sports.

Padukone who claimed first All England Championship title for the country in 1980 gave some advise to the sports federations also. He said they should learn something from Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCC) who has populasied the game amongst the masses through the marketing. Instead of criticising BCCI, the sports federation should follow them to spread their game.
On the occasion Padukone and other dignitaries honours Indian woman cricketer Mona Meshram (GH Raisoni Trophy for best senior sportswoman),  Vidarbha Ranji cricketer Lalit Yadav (GH Raisoni Trophy for best senior sportsman),  budding chess player Raunak Sadhwani (GH Raisoni Trophy for best junior sportsman),  talented Shuttler Malvika Bansod (Baidyanath Trophy for best junior sportswoman)  noted sports organiser Dr Babanrao Taywade (Meeradevi Dasture Trophy for best sports organiser), RS Mundle Dharampeth Arts and Commerce College (KC Bajaj Trophy for sports promotion) and Swaminarayan School (Centre Point School Trophy for sports promotion).
SJAN president Kishor Bagde and secretary Sandeep Dabhekar shared the dais. Dr Ram Thakur conducted the proceedings and Satish Dandare proposed a vote of thanks. SJAN treasurer Suhas Nayse, vice-president Nilesh Deshpande and other members worked hard for the success of programme.
