Srinath presents SJAN awards

INSTEAD of constructing big stadiums, sports associations and organisers should concentrate on providing basic infrastructure to the school and college students, said former Indian pace bowler and current ICC match referee Javagal Srinath on Thursday.
He was speaking during SJAN-Raisoni Achievers Annual Award Function organised by Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with Raisoni Group.
Director of Raisoni Group V Gopalkrishnan, deputy general manger of Bank of Maharashtra TV Ramanmurthy, South Point School Director Deven Dasture and secretary of Sindhu Education Society Deepak Bajaj also shared the dais.
Speaking about the facilities being given to the budding sportspersons, Srinath further said, “Instead of lamenting lack of good stadiums, efforts should be made to provide good playgrounds to the associations, schools and colleges. If this happens, then only we can produce the good sportspersons.”
Speaking about sportspersons’ psychology the former pacer said, “I have found that number of players play with a tendency to avail the jobs. One has to change such tendency to develop himself as good sportsperson”.
Srinath, who is himself an engineer, advised the students to concentrate on studies along with sports. “I would like to advice youngsters not to leave study for the sake of sports.”
Srinath honoured Vidarbha off spinner Akshay Wakhare, who had a fabulous last Ranji season, with GH Raisoni Trophy. Volleyball player from Dhapewada Jayashri Thakre, who was instrumental in clinching gold medal for India in South Asian Volleyball Championship, was felicitated with GH Raisoni Trophy. Basketball player Yash Gainkar, who is city’s first hoopster to be selected in the probable list of Indian U-18 team for Asian School Basketball Championship, was honoured with GH Raisoni Trophy. Chess prodigy Mrudul Dehankar, who brought laurels to the city by winning Under-12 bronze medal in Blitz from of the chess in Asian Youth Chess Championship recently held at Suwon, South Korea and gold in Commonwealth Chess Championship at New Delhi, was honoured with Baidyanath Trophy. Noted football organiser Sattar Ansari was felicitated with Meeradevi Dasture Trophy whereas Nabira Mahavidyalaya, Katol was awarded KC Bajaj Memorial Trophy for promoting Indian sports. City’s Saraswati Vidyalaya got Centre Point School trophy for promoting sports. 
SJAN president Dr Ram Thakur and treasurer Suhas Nayse conducted the proceedings. Secretary Kishor Bagde made introductory remarks.

Srinath to grace to SJAN-Raisoni Annual Award function

Award function on Aug 27

Former India pace spearhead Javagal Srinath will be the chief guest for the Annual Award Function to be jointly organized by Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) and Raisoni Group. The function will be held on Thursday, August 27 at Scientific Society Hall, Aath Rasta Square, at 10 am. 
Arjuna Award recipient, Srinath, has taken 236 wickets in 67 Tests. In One-day Internationals, Srinath has 315 wickets in 229 matches. Post his retirement he has been working with ICC as match referee. 
He was the ICC match referee in the recently concluded One-Day series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. So far he has officiated as match referee in 33 Test matches, 166 One-day Internationals and 49 T20 International matches.
SJAN hopes that his presence and words will inspire not only the awardees but also other sportspersons of the city to excel in their respective fields. 
SJAN and Raisoni group confers total seven awards including—senior and junior sportspersons in men’s and women’s categories, sports organiser, best school and college—every year. SJAN secretary, Kishor Bagde informed that the list of awardees will be announced on a later date. 
Last year, Vidarbha Ranji star Faiz Fazal, athlete Jyoti Chavan, badminton player Rohan Gurbani, basketball player Mugdha Amraotkar and ex-hockey player and organiser Manish Gaur were honoured with the SJAN-Raisoni Awards. Nehru Vidyalaya, Hingna, and SK Porwal College were honoured for their contributions to the field of sports.

SJAN celebrates International Sports Journalists' Day

TOI 'B' win penalty kick contest, handball players feted

Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) celebrated International Sports Journalists' Day with lot of enthusiasm by organising penalty kick competition and felicitating junior handball girls team members at RTM Nagpur University playground on Thursday.

In the penalty kick competition The Times of India 'B' team consisting of Sandeep Dabhekar, Anjaya Anaparthi and Dharmendra Kumar emerged winner defeating The Hitavada 'C' team comprising Rahul Dixit, Paritosh Pramanik and Hitesh Limbachia 2-0. 

In a hardline final, TOI 'E' defeated SJAN 'C' 2-1. The winning team was represented by Amit Sampat, Suhas Nayse and Shashi Rahate. SJAN 'C' include Shailesh Mishra, Shreyas  and Ashish Roy. 

Continuing its tradition to do some charity , SJAN honoured Nagpur district junior handball girls team members  who won the State championship held at Ratnagiri recently. They were Poonam Kadav, Rohini Bhute, Shubhangi Shende, Nitisha Kadav, Karishma Durve, Ayushi Nehare, Prachi Hadke, Poornima Dahat, Komal Wairagade, sakshi Bhotmange, Radhika Bhotmange and their coach Dr Sunil Bhotmange. They were given kit bags on the behalf of SJAN.

Bhoyar, Sharma, Ashlesha, Ranjana walk to glory

Braving rains Dr Diwakar Bhoyar (Bahujan Sangharsh), Rajesh Sharma (Lokmat), Ashlesha Joshi (TOI) and Ranjana Gondane emerged the winners in their respective category in the 3rd Tirupati Urban Co-operative Bank Media Walkathon organised by the Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) on Sunday at Dr Ambedekar College ground, Deekshabhoomi. 

Prabhakar Heart Institute was the co-sponsor of the event. In above 50-years section, veteran Dr Diwakar Bhoyar clocked 22.07 min to win the event. He was followed by Shridhar Burade of Maharashtra Patrakar Sangh with a timing 26.31 min. Last year's winner Alok Tiwari of The Times of India and Arvind Upare of Lokmat finished third and fourth respectively. 

Similarly in below 50 years four-kilometer section, Rajesh Sharma of Lokmat secured first place with a timing 22.06 min. He was followed by Govind Hatwar Govind Hatwar (Sakal) 22.13 min and  Nikhil Pagey (Lokmat) 26.01 min. for second and third place respectively. Last year's champion in the same category Shashikant Rahate lagged behind and achieved fourth place. Fifth place went to Lokmat's Raviraj Ambadwar. 

In two-kilometer women section, TOI's Ashlesha Joshi triumphed with a timing 15.05 min. Anita Shrivastava and Sonu Wajekar both from Dainik Bhaskar secured second and third place respectively. Alka Tote (Lokmat) and Charulata Maitra (TOI) finished fourth and fifth respectively. In family category, Ranjana Gondane walked to glory with a timing 16.35 min. Sarita Hurmade (16.37) and Sunita Sharma (17.47) came second and third respectively. Fourth place went to Manisha Shelke while Ranjana Dabhekar finished fifth. Earlier Dr. Satish Poshettiwar of Prabhakar Heart Institute and Dr Arvind Joshi, vice-principal of Dr Ambedkar College flagged off the races. North Nagpur MLA Dr Milind Mane, Dr Poshettiwar, Dr Arvind Joshi and Shiv Chhatrapati awardee Girish Gadge distributed the prizes. SJAN president Dr Ram Thakur conducted the proceedings while secretary Kishor Bagde proposed a vote of thanks.

Event on Sunday

Nagpur, June 12, 2015: Tirupati Urban Co-Operative Bank Media Walkathon organised by the Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) has evoked good response as around 250 media persons have confirmed their participation. 
The unique event for the mediapersons and their family will be held on Sunday, June 14 at Ambedkar College ground, Deekshabhoomi at 6.30 a.m. Prabhakar Heart Institute are the co-sponsors of the event.The importance of fitness in a journalist's life--which is full of stress be it of the deadline or exclusive stories--is known to all. And most of us know how serious we are about the issue! 
So, SJAN in keeping with its aim of promoting fitness among the sports brethren has been organising the media walkathon for third year in running. 
The walkathon will be held in four categories: Above 50 men (4km), below 50 men (4km), Women (2 km) and women family (2km)
Attractive prizes and mementoes will be given to first three winners in each category. 
The event will be flagged off at 6.30 am but participants will have to report at 6 a.m.Dr Satish Poshettiwar of  Prabhakar Heart Institute and vice-principal of Dr Ambedkar College Dr Arvind Joshi will flag off the event.
 The four-kilometre walk for men in below and above 50 years category will start from Dr Ambedkar College and would take the route through Govt Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya, Kachipura police station, Alankar Talkies, Shankar Nagar square, Bajaj Nagar, Matruseva Sangh College and will terminate at Dr Ambedkar College Sports Academy ground.
Similarly, the two-kilometre walk for women will be flagged off from Dr Ambedkar College and will take the route of Govt Chitrakala Mahavidyalaya, Kachipura police station, Bajaj Nagar square, Matruseva Sangh and will terminate at  Dr Ambedkar College Sports Academy ground.
The prize distribution function will be held immediately after the event. MLA and chairman of Tirupati Urban Co-operative Bank Sameer Meghe, North Nagpur MLA Dr Milind Mane, Dr Poshettiwar and Dr Arvind Joshi will grace the occasion. 
Shiv Chhatrapati awardee Girish Gadge , secrerary of Nagpur District Athletic Association Dr Sharad Suryavanshi and his team are helping the organisers to make the event a great success. 
Last year Alok Tiwari and Shashikant Rahate, both from The Times of India  along with  Tejashree Jogdand (TOI) and Sarita Hurmade excelled in their respective categories.
