Inter-college debate contest on Oct 15

SJAN-Ambedkar College joint venture

SPORTS Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with Dr Ambedkar College, Deekshabhoomi is organising an Inter-College Debate Competition on October 15 at college’s auditorium at 11 am. 
The topic of the competition is ‘Government sports awards has lost its credibility?’.
The winner of the competition will be awarded Rs 2,000 along with a trophy while the runners-up will get Rs 1,500 and trophy. 
The third prize will of Rs 1,000 and trophy. Apart from it, each participant will get certificate.
Each team will be of two students, one will speak in favour and one against the subject. A competitor can use any of the following language English, Hindi or Marathi. 
Each candidate will be allotted four minutes to speak on his topic. Judges decision will be final and the results will be declared immediately after the competition.
The last day of entry is October 12.

SJAN's media carrom from April 17

Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) will be organising its seventh edition of carrom tournament for media employees from April 17 to April 19 at SJAN office, situated at Vivekanand Hindi Primary School, behind Sai Mandir, Wardha road. 

MG Wadhwani of Bhavya Builders and Developers, KS Lamba and Sons and Universal Industrial Equipment Limited are extending their support for the success of tournament. The tournament will be held in two categories i.e. men’s singles and men’s doubles event. Entry fee for men’s singles will be Rs 20 and Rs 30 for doubles, says a press release issued by SJAN secretary Kishor Bagde.The last date of entry is April 15. Entries can be confirmed with the sports desks of respective newspapers. Cash prizes and trophies would be given to the winner, runners-up and semi-finalists in each categories.Siddhart Narnaware will be the chief referee of the tournament and he will be assisted by Mukund Nagpurkar. Loksatta's Vijay Sant wins twin titles

Loksatta's Vijay Sant avenged his last year's defeat as he annexed men's singles as well as doubles title in the 10th badminton tournament for media employees organised by Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur. The tournament was sponsored by Vatsalya Group.
In the singles final, Sant defeated defending champion Ashish Jain 21-18, 17-21, 21-15 and later paired with veteran Vivek Puradbhat to clinch the men's doubles title. The Loksatta duo defeated Lokmat Group's Ashish Jain and Alshar Khan 21-8, 21-19.
The women's singles title went to Manjusha Joshi who remained unbeaten. In her last and final match, she defeated Aparna Nair 21-9.
NDBA president Kundatai Vijaykar was the chief guest of prize distribution function. Amit Bajaj, Vice President, NDBA, was the guest of honour. Vice-chancellor of RTM Nagpur University Dr Vilas Sapkal presided over the function. SJAN president Dr Ram Thakur conducted the proceedings and proposed a vote of thanks.

India’s No. 1 shuttler Srikanth to inaugurate media badminton

India’s No. 1 men’s singles badminton player Kidambi Srikanth will grace the inaugural ceremony of the annual badminton tournament for media employees on March 20.

Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) and Post Graduate Teaching Department for Physical Education, RTM Nagpur University will be jointly organizing the three-day event.

With an impressive world ranking of 20, Srikanth is now India’s best men’s singles player. Recently the Guntur lad overtook Paripulli Kashyap in the rankings. Kashyap is currently slipped to world No. 25.

Srikanth, a trainee of Hyderabad-based Pullela Gopichand Academy, became the first Indian badminton player to win the Grand Prix Gold title outside the country when he emerged champion at the Thailand Open last year.

The 21-year-old could have become the first Indian to win two GP Gold titles but unfortunately lost in the final of the Syed Modi International India GP Gold Badminton Championship at Lucknow in January, 2014 in three games.

The SJAN media badminton meet will be sponsored by Vatsalya Group and will be held at varsity’s Subhedar Hall, off Amravati road. Matches will be played with Li Ning feather shuttles.

Lokmat-Sakal face off in final today

Defending champion Lokmat will take on Sakal in the final of 16th Vicco-SJAN Inter-Press T20 Cricket Tournament organised by Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) on Saturday at Dr Ambedkar College ground at 9.30 a.m.
Vicco laboratories are the main sponsor of the tournament while Motion Tutorials are the co-sponsor.
Lokmat who are still undefeated in this tournament are desperate to defend the crown. On the contrary Sakal who have qualified for the final for the first time in the history of inter-press cricket are eying maiden title. Therefore the spectators can witness a tough encounter between both the sides.
Lokmat entered the final defeating Punyanagari by one wicket in a thriller. The confidence of Sakal is high after stunning last year's runners-up The Times of India in the second semi-final. Lokmat have a strong batting line up in the form of  strong man-of-the-series contender Shrad Mishra, skipper Amit Khodke, Nitin Patariya and all-rounder  Sachin Khadke. Their bowlers Sachin Rahangdale, Mishra, Khadke are also performing well. Sakal's batting  mainly revolve around Pankaj Borkar who so far is highest run scorer in the tournament and opening batsman Kishor Jamkar. Sunil Thawkar is another player to be watched out for.
The prize distribution function of the tournament will be held immediately after the final. NIT chairman Praveen Darade will be the chief guest on the occasion. Pramod Walmandre of Motion, secretary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Smarak Samiti Sadanand Fulzele, director of Ashwamedh Infrastructure Rahul Fusey and NUWJ president Bramha Shankar Tripathi will also grace the occasion.

India can become sports nation: Saba

Former Indian wicketkeeper and current BCCI national selector Saba Karim said if the sportspersons take the praise as well as criticism positively, then those days are not behind when India can emerge as one of the powerful sports nation in the world.
He was speaking as a special guest during the annual sports awards function organised by Sports journalists’ Association in association with Nagpur Municipal Corporation at Tilak Patrakar Bhavan on Sunday.
BCCI vice-president Sudhir Dabir was the chief guest on the occasion. Mayor Prof. Anil Sole presided over the function. NMC Standing Committee chairman Dayashankat Tiwari and deputy mayor Sandeep Jadhav also shared the dais.
Speaking further Karim who himself is a good cricket analyst said the young and aspiring journalists should keep themselves aware about rules an regulations of the particular game they want to follow. He said, “ Journalists have lot of powers and at the same time it is their responsibility to keep minute details of particular sports of sportspersons. If they use their weapon effectively, then it will help to build country as sports nation”.
Mr Dabir while appreciating SJAN’s initiative said such programmes always encourage the talented sportspersons to show their talent. While guiding the youngsters, Dabir asked them to follow master blaster sachin Tendulkar who always keep himself fit through his long cricketing career.
Prof. Anil Sole said, “ There is good scope for sports in the city but he lamented that the city lack infrastructure. Now the time has come to change the attitude towards sports”. He also congratulated SJAN for maintaining continuity in organising such functions.
Dayashankar Tiwari and Sandeep Jadhav also spoke on the occasion.
Right-handed middle-order Vidarbha batsman Ranjit Paradkar got Mayor’s Trophy for the best senior sportsman while Mona Meshram , who has been selected in the Indian women’s cricket team for the World Cup got senior female sportsperson trophy.On he behalf of Mona her mother accepted the trophy from the guests.
 In the junior boys category, talented tennis player Mohammad Vali got the WCL Trophy while athlete  Sayali Waghmare , who won silver at the junior nationals, received the Baidyanath Trophy in junior girls’ category.
Sunil Hande, an astute volleyball organiser was rewarded with Meeradevi Dasture trophy.
Pandit Bachchraj Vyas Vidyalaya, is a big name when it comes to promoting Indian games. The school received Centre Point School trophy. Similarly, SB City College got KC Bajaj Memorial Trophy for their services to women’s sports and infrastructure development.

Over 200 hoopsters thronged the Dharampeth Krida Mandal basketball courts, Shankar Nagar, on Thursday afternoon to fight for top honours in the unique Inter-School Free Throw (shooting) Competition organised by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) and Nagpur District Basketball Association (NDBA). The tournament has been organised to celebrate National Sports Day on August 29. The competition was inaugurated by Yashvant Khodke, a Non Resident Indian in the presence of Sumitra Luley, NDBA Vice-President and office-bearers of SJAN and NDBA.The preliminary rounds were played on Thursday. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be played on Friday morning The teams that made to the quarter-finals in the boys section include two teams of Centre Point School, Wardhaman Nagar, The Jain International School, Centre Point School, Katol Road, Saraswati Vidyalaya, Dharampeth High School and Hadas High School.In the girls section both teams of Mount Carmel High School and Centre Point School Katol Road and a team each from Bhavan’s Bharatiya Vidya Mandir, Somalwar High School, Ramdaspeth and Modern School Koradi Road entered the last eight.Ruchita Shrivastava of Mount Carmel gave a fine display converting three of her four attempts.Purval Joge of Saraswati Vidyalaya and Harsh Surana of The Jain International School emerged top scorers in the boys section with a fine conversion (3 out of 4).The prize distribution function will be held on Friday at 9 am.
