Praveen Lokhande hammered a record-breaking unbeaten 157 to help ‘The Hitavada’ thrash ‘Tarun Bharat’ by 165 runs in the opening encounter of the 15th Orange City Hospital Cup Inter-Press T20 cricket tournament at Dr Ambedkar College ground, Deekshabhoomi.
The tourney is sponsored by OCHRI. Satvik Financial Services Limited are the co-sponsors.
Man of the match Lokhande came one down and went after the hapless ‘Tarun Bharat’ bowlers to hit 26 boundaries and one six in his hurricane knock. Lokhande broke previous record of 147 held by Nitin Pataria of Lokmat.
Riding on his blast, ‘The Hitavada’ amassed 231-3 in 20 overs. Lokhande was well supported by opener Abhimanyu Garud (34; 24b, 6x4) and Pawan Sawade (26; 20 b, 2x4).
‘Tarun Bharat’ were shot out for 66 in 13.3 overs. Off-spinner Vinay Pande was the wrecker-in-chief clinching four wickets for nine runs.
Seamers Nilay Surve and Saleem Sheikh chipped in with two wickets each conceding 15 and 21 runs, respectively. Susheem Kolay and Ramamurti Nerlay took a wicket apiece.
In another match, ‘Lokshahi Varta’ defeated ‘Dainik Bhaskar’ by five runs.
‘Lokshahi Varta’ scored 131 all out in 18 overs. Dhiraj Thute (33; 15b, 7x4) was the top-scorer. Bandu Dhore (4-26) and Sujan Masid (3-28) were the wicket-takers.
‘Bhaskar’ were bowled out for 126 runs in 18 overs. Masid remained not out on 58 (9x4). Sarang Chavhan (3-27), Manish Gadekar (3-24) and Abhay Dubey (3-20) picked up wickets for ‘Lokshahi Varta’.
Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Udaybhaskar Nair, Chairman, Nairsons. Dr Anup Marar, Director, OCHRI, and Prakash Dixit, President, Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) also graced the function.
SJAN member Dr Ram Thakur conducted the proceedings. Vice-President Rahul Dixit made the introductory remarks while Secretary Kishor Bagde proposed a vote of thanks.

CricMedia souvenir released

CricMedia, the annual souvenir brought out by Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) to mark the 15th Inter-Press Invitational Twenty20 Cricket Tournament was released on Sunday at Tilak Patrakar Bhavan, Panchsheel Square on Sunday (January 6, 2013). Deputy General Manager, State Bank of India B Shankar was the chief guest of the function. On the occasion former Indian cricket team manager  Rajan Nair, Principal, Madhavrao Wankhede Sharirik Shikshan Mahavidyalaya Dr Shyam Charde, former Vidarbha Ranji captain and SBI PRO Hemant Wasu  also shared the dias. The guests congratulated SJAN for organising the cricket tournament for media persons consistently. The souvenir include a review of last edition of inter-press cricket tournament and other activities of SJAN. Colour clothings as well as the tournament schedule were also distributed to the members of participating teams on the occasion.

India can become sports nation: Saba

SJAN-NMC award function organised

Former Indian wicketkeeper and current BCCI national selector Saba Karim said if the sportspersons take the praise as well as criticism positively, then those days are not behind when India can emerge as one of the powerful sports nation in the world.
He was speaking as a special guest during the annual sports awards function organised by Sports journalists’ Association in association with Nagpur Municipal Corporation at Tilak Patrakar Bhavan on Sunday.
BCCI vice-president Sudhir Dabir was the chief guest on the occasion. Mayor Prof. Anil Sole presided over the function. NMC Standing Committee chairman Dayashankat Tiwari and deputy mayor Sandeep Jadhav also shared the dais.
Speaking further Karim who himself is a good cricket analyst said the young and aspiring journalists should keep themselves aware about rules an regulations of the particular game they want to follow. He said, “ Journalists have lot of powers and at the same time it is their responsibility to keep minute details of particular sports of sportspersons. If they use their weapon effectively, then it will help to build country as sports nation”.
Mr Dabir while appreciating SJAN’s initiative said such programmes always encourage the talented sportspersons to show their talent. While guiding the youngsters, Dabir asked them to follow master blaster sachin Tendulkar who always keep himself fit through his long cricketing career.
Prof. Anil Sole said, “ There is good scope for sports in the city but he lamented that the city lack infrastructure. Now the time has come to change the attitude towards sports”. He also congratulated SJAN for maintaining continuity in organising such functions.
Dayashankar Tiwari and Sandeep Jadhav also spoke on the occasion.
Right-handed middle-order Vidarbha batsman Ranjit Paradkar got Mayor’s Trophy for the best senior sportsman while Mona Meshram , who has been selected in the Indian women’s cricket team for the World Cup got senior female sportsperson trophy.On he behalf of Mona her mother accepted the trophy from the guests.
 In the junior boys category, talented tennis player Mohammad Vali got the WCL Trophy while athlete  Sayali Waghmare , who won silver at the junior nationals, received the Baidyanath Trophy in junior girls’ category.
Sunil Hande, an astute volleyball organiser was rewarded with Meeradevi Dasture trophy.
Pandit Bachchraj Vyas Vidyalaya, is a big name when it comes to promoting Indian games. The school received Centre Point School trophy. Similarly, SB City College got KC Bajaj Memorial Trophy for their services to women’s sports and infrastructure development.

SJAN-NMC annual awards function on Sunday

The annual awards ceremony organised by Sports Journalists' Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will be held on Sunday, december 30, 2012 at Tilak Patrakar Bhavan at 10 am.
 BCCI vice-president Sudhir Dabir along with national selector and former Indian wicket-keeper Saba Karim will be chief guests of the function. Mayor Prof Anil Sole will preside over the function. Deputy mayor Sandeep Jadhav, NMC Standing Committee chairman  Dayashankar Tiwari and municipal commissioner Shyam Wardhane and Deaven Dasture will grace the function.
Vidarbha  Ranji cricketer Ranjit Paradkar, Indian cricketer Mona Meshram, tennis player Mohammad Vali, athlete Sayali Waghmare and Sunil Hande have been selected for the awards.
Besides individual sportspersons, Pandit Bachchraj Vyas Vidyalaya and SB City Mahavidyalaya will be awarded for their contributions to the field of sports.

Inter-press cricket meet from Jan 8

SPORTS Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) is organising SJAN-Orange City Hospital and Research Institute (OCHRI) 15th Invitational Inter-Press Cricket Twenty20 Tournament from January 8 to 24, 2013.
Matches will be played at Dr Ambedkar College ground, Deekshabhoomi and Vasantnagar ground, informs Kishor Bagde, Secretary, SJAN, through a press release.
Nine teams, including defending champions The Hitavada, runners-up Punyanagari, Lokmat, Sakal, Times of India, Tarun Bharat, Lokshahivarta, Dainik Bhaskar and Loksatta are taking part in the event.
The event is sponsored by OCHRI. Satvik Financial Services are the co-sponsors of the event. Man of the match awards are sponsored by Gangadharrao Chinchole Smruti Seva Sansthan.
Final of the tournament will be played on January 24 at Dr Ambedkar College, Deekshabhoomi.
White balls of ‘Wisden County’ company sponsored by Amar Sports will be used in the tournament. A souvenir named ‘CricMedia’ and schedule of the tournament will be released soon.

Somalwar girls, CPS Wardhaman Nagar boys triumph

Girls from Somalwar High School, Nikhalas, and Centre Point School, Wardhaman Nagar, boys reigned supreme in the Inter-School Basketball Free Throw Competition held at the Dharampeth Krida Mandal (DKM) courts in Shankar Nagar on Wednesday.
Around 200 students from 24 schools showcased their shooting skills in a unique competition organized to celebrate National Sports Day by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with Dharampeth Krida Mandal.
The low-scoring girls final saw the five-member team from Somalwar School get the better of RS Mundle English Medium School 3-2. Members of the winning team include Tejashree Ingole, Sanjana Chopkar, Madhura Sonegaokar, Parnavee Pathak and Aditi Saptarshy.
In contrast the boys’ summit clash was a high scoring affair. CPS Wardhaman Nagar defeated their Katol Road counterparts 7-5. Those who represented the winning team include Mohit Humne, Vishal Gurnani, Sarthak Gubrani, Sudeep Ghoshal and Sahil Bhure.
It is worth to mention here that the runner-up teams in both the boys and girls category were unbeaten till the finals and suffered their first defeat in the summit clash.
Other teams who made it to the semifinals include St Xavier's and School of Scholars boys, and CPS Katol Road and Saraswati Vidyalaya girls.
In the event for journalists, Amit Sampat of The Times of India captured the crown  while Paritosh Pramanik of The Hitavada finished runner-up. The Hitavada sports scribes Sarang Kunte and Abhimanyu Garud had to satisfy with the third and fourth place finish.
Around 70 matches were played in the league-cum-knockout event.
Later the concluding ceremony was graced by owner of Star Motors Shabbir Vali while Mohan Sathe shared the dais as a special guest. SJAN president Naresh Shelke conducted the proceedings while treasurer Anupam Soni proposed the vote of thanks.
Those who handled the technical aspect of the competition under the guidance of NDBA officials include some senior national-level players. The girls event was managed by Disha Wadpalliwar, Sayali Gadkari, Karishma Manekar, Akansha Deshpande and Maithili Pantawane while the boys competition was successfully managed by Rohit Pisipati, Raunak Sukhdeve, Vinesh Rao and Rajat Pawar.
Those who worked hard for the successful conduct of the event include Samir Shrivastava, Anup Rajurkar, Ashish Guru and Manoj Rakshak.

SJAN-DKM to hold free throw contest

Inter-School event to mark National Sports Day


SPORTS Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with Dharampeth Krida Mandal (DKM) will celebrate National Sports Day with a unique competition for school students.
An inter-school free throw (basketball shooting) competition has been organised by the sports scribes at DKM’s Shankar Nagar-based courts on August 29.
The team event to be conducted in both boys and girls section will be a first of its kind competition.
A team of five players each in the boys and girls category from every school will be allowed to take part in the competition with matches being played on the league-cum-knockout basis.
Players below 17 years will be allowed to participate in the one-day event which would be played between 8 am and 10.30 am. Entries for the team event would be on first-come-first serve basis and are restricted to just 12 teams both in the boys as well as girls sections. One school will be allowed to field only one team.
On the occasion, a free throw competition for journalists and photographers will also be organised.
Officials of Nagpur District Basketball Association would handle the technical aspect of the competition.
