VIDARBHA’S first national carrom champion Yogesh Dhongre was felicitated by Sports Journalists Association of Nagpur (SJAN) at Tilak Patrakar Bhavan on Tuesday.
Dhongre, who hails from Ansing village of Washim district, brought laurels to Vidarbha when he emerged champion in the 43rd national carrom championship which concluded recently at Visakhapatnam.
The 27-year old defeated former world champions in his first match and also in the final game.
Asked whether he was confident of doing well in the tourney, Dhongre said, “I was very confident of it (doing well). Before the championship, I asked my coach if anyone from Vidarbha has won the title. When he said no, I told him that I will surely bag the trophy this year.”
Dhongre, whose father runs a garage in Ansing Village, was also  awarded cash prize worth one lakh rupees by Vidarbha Carrom Association.
Vidarbha team finished third in the tournament. It would well have been a one-two finish for Vidarbha but Irshad lost the semi-final match. Mohammed Wasi, who was the coach of Vidarbha team, was also feted on the occasion.
Those present at the event included Prabjot Singh Bachher, General Secretary of All India Carrom Federation, Khan Mohammed Azhar Hussain, President, VCA, Yashwant Chitale, Founder Secretary, Vidarbha Carrom Federation and former carrom player Fattehmah Mohammed.
Bachher, on the occasion, said that Indian carrom players are doing well off late in international events.
“Apart from states we have 18  affiliated units which include top government agencies  like Indian Airlines LIC PB, Jain Irrigation. We have been doing quite well at the international level,” he said.
Khan Mohammed Azhar Hussain too said that efforts are on to make carrom popular amongst school children. “We have already started inter-school events in Zilla Parishad schools and we will start such events in CBSE schools as well,” he said.
SJAN president Dr Ram Thakur compered the event while secretary Kishor Bagde proposed a vote of thanks.
