Ashish-Meenal claim mixed doubles crown


New pair of Ashish Jain and Meenal Jain emerged mixed doubles champions on the penultimate day of the Gaikwad-Patil International School Media Badminton tournament, organized by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur in association with Nagpur Municipal Corporation, at the Vivekanand Nagar NMC Indoor Hall here on Friday.

In the mixed doubles summit clash, Ashish and Meenal defeated TOI pair of Suhas Nayse and Deblina Dasgupta 15-8, 15-9.

The men’s doubles semifinals witnessed a major upset as unseeded Mahesh Sarangi and Ameya Manke shocked top seeds Nayse and Fakhruddin Bohra 15-11, 15-8. In the second semis, Jain and his partner Pravin Kathane surprised second seeds Sunil Warrier and Manish Sakharwade of TOI 15-5, 15-3.

In the men’s singles, top seed Jain along with second seed Nayse, unseeded players Manke and Farhan Quazi booked their berths in the semis.

The finals will be played on Saturday at 9 am followed by the prize distribution function. MLC Prof Anil Sole will be the chief guest on the occasion. NMC sports committee chairman Nagesh Sahare and principal of Gaikwad-Patil International School Shabih Chaurasia Chaurasia will also grace the occasion. Yonex has sponsored the shuttles and T-shirts for the winners.

Seeds sail into quarters

Top seed Ashish Jain along with second seed Suhas Nayse and third seed Fakhruddin Bora entered the men' singles quarters smoothly on the second day of Gaikwad Patil International School Media Badminton Tournament, organised by Sports Journalist's Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with Nagpur Municipal Corporation at NMC indoor hall, Vivekanand Nagar on Thursday.
In the women section, Loksatta' s Rakhi Chavan and Monika Chaturvedi set up a title clash.
In the men's pre-quarters, Ashish Jain of Lokmat  defeated his colleague Vilas Tijare 30-7. Bora (TOI) quelled the challenge of Lokmat's Rajesh Sharma 30-25. Farhan Quazi, Raynold Morris, Mahesh Sarangi, Ameya Manke and Waseem Qureshi also sailed into the quarters. Second seed Nayse got walkover in prequarters as his opponent didn't turn up.
In double, TOI's Sunil Warrier-Manish Sakharwade pair entered the semis defeating Lokmat's Wasim Qureshi-Raynold morris 15-10, 15-11. On Friday the quarters will begin at 9 a.m. followed by semis.

SJAN Media Badminton begins




Fourth seed Dharmendra Kumar stunned on opening day

Dharmendra Kumar was stunned by Pravin Kanthale on the opening day of the Gaikwad-Patil International School Media Badminton Tournament. The meet is being organized by Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur (SJAN) in association with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation at Vivekanand Nagar Indoor Hall.

The Times of India’s Dharmendra, who was seeded fourth, lost the second round match against Lokmat’s Kanthale by 30-22. In the men’s double category TOI pair of Sunil Warrier-Manish Sakharwade brushed aside Lokmat’s Piyush Dabhekar-Sachin Vaidya 30-7.
The tournament was inaugurated by Aparna Popat. Chairman of Gaikwad-Patil Group Mohan Gaikwad presided over the function. Leader of ruling party in NMC, Sandeep Joshi, and principal of Gaikwad-Patil International School Shabiah Chaurasia were also present on the occasion.
