Vicco-SJAN Inter- Press Cricket Tourney begins
Defending champion Lokmat began their campaign on winning note defeating Sakal by four wickets on the first day of 16th Vicco-SJAN Inter-press Twenty-29 Cricket Tournament at Dr Ambedkar College ground on Wednesday.
In another tie at Vasant Nagar ground, Punyanagari drubbed Tarun Bharat by eight wickets. At Dr Ambedkar College ground Sakal won the toss and elected to bat first. They were restricted to 132 for eight in the stipulated 20 overs. Thanks to Devendra Sadavarti who claimed three wickets conceding just 17 runs. Sachin Rahangdale, Sachin Khadke and Sharad Mishra got one each. For Sakal, middle order batsman Pankaj Borkar top scored with 42. Sanjeev Sharma (35) and Sunil Thawkar (32) also batted well.
In reply Lokmat chased down the target sparing four wickets in 17.5 overs. Openers Sharad Mishra (19, 26b, 2x4) and Nitin Patariya (46, 27b, 2x6, 5x4) gave flying start to Lokmat stitching up 71 run partnership for first wicket. However after the departure of Mishra with 73 runs on board, Lokmat lost three quick wickets and were reduced to 83 for five at one stage. But then Avishkar Deshmukh (30 not out) held the fort by playing sensibly and ensured the victory. He was well supported by Devendra Sadavarti who remained unbeaten on ten. Mishra was declared man-of-the-match for all-round performance.
At Vasant Nagar ground, batting first Tarun Bharat scored 155 for seven in 20 overs. Nitin Baitute played a brilliant knock of 69 hitting nine boundaries. Lakhan Jaiswal (26) also batted well. Bhushan Mhaisekar remained not out on 15.
For Punyanagari, Manoj Zariya and Shrikant Bondre were chipped in with two wickets each.
In reply, Pankaj Pande (60*, 33b, 8x4) and Ravi Duf (51, 24b, 11x4) knocked off half-centuries as Punyanagari achieved the target losing just two wickets in 15 overs. Sridhar Hatangale remained unbeaten on 25.
