Patariya shines in Lokmat’s tense win

A fine 27-ball 67 from Nitin Patariya and a timely half century from Amit Roshankhede (50) helped ‘Lokmat’ scrape past defending champions ‘The Hitavada’ by five wickets in a thrilling Group ‘A’ league game of the 15th SJAN-OCHRI inter-press invitational T20 cricket tournament.
The tournament is organised by Sports Journalists’ Association of Nagpur.
Batting first, ‘The Hitavada’ posted a challenging target of 173 thanks to some fine batting by last match centurion Pravin Lokhande (67; 52b; 5x4; 2x6) and Nikhil Dixit (55; 33b; 8x4, 1x6). The duo added 107 runs for third wicket to help ‘The Hitavada’ reach 172 from 20 overs. But all the hard work put in by Lokhande and Dixit went down the drain as butter-fingered ‘The Hitavada’ fielders spilled easy chances.
Lokmat got off to a worst possible start losing two wickets in first over, thanks to some spirited bowling by ‘The Hitavada’ seamer Nilay Surve. But Patariya and Roshankhede, who added 110 runs for the third wicket, swung the match their way with some authoritative hits.
Patariya’s fine innings included three boundaries and eight sixes while Roshankhede hit seven balls to the fence. Their dismissals raised hopes for ‘The Hitavada’ but Sachin Khadke (39*; 39b; 4x4) lowered his guard to see ‘Lokmat’ through in a tense finish with three balls to spare.
‘The Hitavada’ were poor on field and dropped catches and missed run out chances at crucial junctures.
In another match, ‘Sakal’ defeated Loksatta by 48 runs to register their first win. ‘Loksatta’ became the second team to bow out of the tournament after ‘Dainik Bhaskar’.
‘Sakal’ amassed 179 from 20 overs. Pramod Guddhe scored a fine 52 from 41 balls which included eight boundaries while Sunil Thawkar scored valuable 41 from 16 deliveries. His knock included four boundaries and two sixes.
For ‘Loksatta’, Pawan Kursunge took three wickets while Balmukund Kadwe and Sudarshan Sakharkar took one wicket each.
In reply, ‘Loksatta’ were all out scoring 131 runs. Sachin Turuk scored 32 while same number of runs came from extras. For ‘Sakal’, Swapnil Nagpure took four wickets while Pankaj Borkar, Kishor Jamkar took two each.
